For those with younger families its possible to view the island from a distance and then spend the day in the rather excellent reptile park nearby!

The world famous Bayeux Tapestry could make a good day trip out - and could easily be combined with a trip round some of the D-Day landing sites or museums or the Caen D-Day memorial.

As well as art museums Rennes also houses other museums, such as the science museum - with its special 'Merlin' zone and the ecomusee de pays de Rennes, concert halls and much much more.

For lovers of contemporary art the Orniris Art gallery  offers a regularly changing display of world class contemporary art whilst the Musee des Beaux-Arte de Rennes hosts excellent exhibitions of art and cultural exhibits, including Rubens, Veronese, Toudouze Eros & Aprhodite as well as works by Picasso and others

Art & Culture

Brittany has a rich culture that often crops up in unexpected places - the picture to the right is of a modern art installation in the dungeons of the castle at Pontivy. Lots of the small villages and towns of the area have their own small museums and art galleries.

Musical and cultural concerts and shows often use open air venues during the summer and local churches and chapels all year round, for example visiting choirs or Handel's Messiah with over 70 singers. The concerts are sometimes well publicised, but for many of the museums you can be meandering through the villages and you just spot a small sign; this type of exploration can be fantastic fun. We have listed some of the links and some of the larger sites here, to give a flavour of the depth and breadth available, and you will find many more in your welcome information pack in each cottage.

Classics & Opera:

Choral music and High Mass in a Cathedral ( Sainte-Anne d'Auray), or Carmen in a custom built concert hall for £5? How about Ibrahim Maalouf and a full symphony orchestra? Or why not go to watch the Moscow Theatre Ballet perform Romeo & Julliet?

Modern Dance:

There a lots of local performances with quite spectacular displays. The local town of Pontivy regularly hosts events shows with over 200 dancers - for example 31.05.14-01.06.14 - a 3 hour "Danse Modern Jazz", with other local towns host Hip-Hop festivals.

Jazz, Blues & Soul:

There is a rich culture locally, especially of jazz, with lots of local villages and towns hosting small concerts, look out for local posters.
